Ironbridge Gorge Museums; Tar Tunnel

Put on a hard hat & explore the treacle-like tar that is still oozing through the walls at the Tar Tunnel. This unusual attraction is just one of the 10 museums that is included within the Ironbridge Museum Pass scheme.  The Tar Tunnel offers something out of the ordinary that will particularly fascinate younger guests & you can see our thoughts in our tried & tested review below.

Located along the Shropshire Canal, just a short walk from Coalport China Museum, you’ll find the Ironbridge Museum Tar Tunnel.  As we arrived, we were kitted out with a yellow hard hat that immediately comes in handy as we scrambled along the tar tunnel.  The darkened interior and uneven ground all made for an eerie & mysterious experience that the children lapped up.  Being able to discover actual tar still seeping out of the walls & building up within tar pools topped it off.  You can even touch the tar should you wish but can make for a messy visit!

Tar Tunnel

The Tar Tunnel

The Tar Tunnel is one of 10 museums that sits within the collection of Ironbridge Gorge Museums alongside the likes of Blists Hill Victorian Town and Enginuity.

Billed as a 20 minute attraction, this isn’t a stand-alone attraction, although ideal as an add-on within the Ironbridge Pass offer, (we’d visited Enginuity in the morning and popped down to the Tar Tunnel later that afternoon).  One handy hint to know is that your parking ticket for Blists Hill or Enginuity is also valid at the Tar Tunnel so no need for any additional parking charges.

Ironbridge Gorge Museums; The Pass

The Ironbridge Museum Pass offers unlimited access to all 10 Ironbridge Museums over a 12 month period including the popular Blists Hill Victorian Town, family friendly Enginuity & of course the Tar Tunnel, (t&c’s apply).  The added advantage with the family annual pass is that it includes up to 4 children including step children, grandchildren and cared for children up to the age of 16. years.  There are also options to upgrade to The Pass Plus and elect to pay by direct debit and you can pick up a further 10% off either pass.
