The Minack Theatre

Whilst the Minack moulds itself to the look of an ancient Greek theatre, you’d perhaps be surprised to learn that it’s actually under 100 years old.  Built by Rowena Cade, with the assistance of her dedicated gardener, they brought about a stunning transformation of this rugged headland that was initially bought up for just £100 after the First World War.

Rowena quickly become involved in local events including amateur dramatics from which she volunteered to host performances of The Tempest from her clifftop garden.  From here an idea was conceived and so now we have the Minack theatre perched on top the rugged cliffs of the Cornwall peninsular.  Offering a truly spectacular setting for a range of performances including Shakespearean plays, music & dance interpretations and children’s adaptations, it is certainly worth a stop off on any visit to Cornwall.

People from around the world flock to Porthcuro to experience the magic of the Minack, so if you’re planning a visit, particularly during peak times, then it’s best to book as early to avoid disappointment.  Performances vary throughout the season so worth checking out what interests you and then plan around it.

The good news is that you, once you’ve purchased tickets, you can keep your costs down as parking is free and you’re welcome to pack a picnic to enjoy before the show or during the interval.  We saw countless numbers of visitors carrying picnic hampers and even a bottle of fizz to enjoy the festivities.  There are limited onsite refreshments available, (the restaurant is currently being refurbished at the time of our visit), for those that prefer.

The Minack; Tips & Tricks

1. If you want to be at the front of the action, then consider you will be sitting on concrete so worth bringing a cushion or two, (and a rug for the chillier nights).  Alternatively, opt for a grass seating in Area B for a more cushioned experience.

2. This is an outdoor venue so worth taking note of the weather and dressing appropriately.  Worth noting performances will go ahead in inclement weather & refunds are not available if the performance goes ahead. Only in the most severe of weather, will performance not take place, so if in doubt, check with the venue.

3. If there are no performances available during your visit, take the opportunity to join a daytime tour to learn more about the history and explore the theatre at your leisure

4. Keep the costs down and pack a picnic to enjoy before the performance or during the interval – a great venue to enjoy a packed tea in style.

5. This is popular destination so please do book in advance as performances do sell out, particularly during the peak summer season.
