Running at the Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium

Built on the site of a simple racecourse back to 330BC, the Panathemaic Stadium was rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus around 144 AD.  Many centuries later, it went on to host the first modern Olympic games in 1896.

We’re always a firm believer in immersive experiences so there’s no better way to enjoy this attraction than a chance to run on this historic track.  You’ll need an early start as runners are only permitted during the start of the day. You’ll be rewarded with an unique opportunity to enjoy this cultural attraction in the manner in which it was built for.

Running on the Panathenaic Track is limited from opening time until 9am each day.  Particularly during peak summer times, this does at least allow you to run during the cooler part of the day. Opening times can vary so best to check up to date information with the Panathenaic Stadium before setting out.

On the day of our visit, the stadium opened at 8am giving us a full hour to enjoy the track.  Although we were visiting out of season, we were surprised to find we were the only visitors at the ticket kiosk for the allotted time.  Indeed, apart from 2 other runners who sauntered in 15 minutes later, we had the track to ourselves for the full hour.

3. Look out for the winner’s podium located close to the track. The good news is that you’re welcome to climb up & take photos with quite the backdrop.

4. Once you’ve finished your run, head back to the entrance to pick up your free audio tour.  The tour takes around 45minutes to an hour to complete and gives you a good oversight of the history of the stadium.  Having experienced the track first hand, to then learn about the history behind the stadium, it’s quite simply awe-inspiring.
