Churchill War Rooms

Churchill War Rooms; Tips & Tricks

1. Booking online offers timed ticketed sessions to allow for a smoother navigation through the attraction. Whilst there isn’t any financial incentive to book in advance, it will guarantee entry at popular times of the year.  Worth noting that there are strict on timings so turning up early won’t get in any quicker!

2. Walk-up tickets are available on the day but are subject to availability.  Worth checking with a member of staff situated outside of the main entrance on the day who will direct you to the appropriate queue.  Walk-in admissions are slotted in between time-ticketed sessions so this option works best for those wanting to retain flexibility on when they visit – but remember, there’s no guarantee. If you have children within your party, please note that any person 15 years & under must be accompanied by an adult throughout their visit.

3. Your admission tickets includes access to Cabinet War Rooms, the Churchill Museum & Churchill’s Bunker that includes his private living spaces. This is a walk-through attraction where you are free to navigate each area at your own pace.  Take time to look through the exhibits, reading through the written information or speaking with the knowledgeable guides that you’ll find dotted around.

4. Audio Guides are included within your admission charge & includes a range of languages. The audio guide is useful tool, helping you to understand what you see before you, as you make your way around the attraction. The Churchill Museum contains further written information on the exhibits, (in English). As visitors navigate the audio guides, particularly in the Cabinet War Rooms, there is an eerie quietness as you look into the room where many of the major decisions of World War 2 were taken.

Churchill War Rooms & Visitor Guide

Churchill War Rooms; Tips & Tricks

5. The Churchill War Rooms are located within a confined space, complete with narrow corridors and artificial light.  Remember this was set up for Churchill and his War Cabinet to meet during WW2 rather than any thought of it becoming a visitor attraction. It does feel cramped & crowded at times, particularly during busy visitor times, that can have you feeling the need to rush through at pace. If you have any flexibility, then worth considering visiting on quieter days/times as you’ll be rewarded with a much better user experience.

6. Look out for the original oak door to 10 Downing Street, replaced in the early 90’s following an IRA attack, that is located within the Churchill Museum

7. There is a cafe located two-thirds around the attraction that can offer a timely break to sit and take stock. Worth noting that the only toilets available are located at the beginning and the end of your visit.

8. Combine entry to the Churchill War Rooms with the ceremony of the Changing of the King’s Life Guard that takes place nearby on Horse Guards Parade. Great for those visiting London on a budget as it’s free of charge and goes down a treat with children. Worth checking times & dates to plan this into your schedule.

Churchill War Rooms; Tips & Tricks

9. Another option to consider when planning your itinerary is a visit to Big Ben.  Here’s a chance to climb the 334 spiral steps & experience the clock tower and belfry up close and personal as it chimes in the hour.  These two different visitor attractions compliment each other well and can be achieved in a day with some forward planning.

10. You can also combine the Churchill War Rooms with a Tour of the Houses of Parliament as they are located close by to each other although we would suggest you might find interest waning by the end of the day.

11. You are also close to number 10 Downing Street where you can glimpse at the home of the Prime Minster’s home. If you want to get closer, then you’ve the option of entering the ballot for the 10 Downing Street Tour that takes place once a year!

12. Unfortunately suitcases and large luggage will not be permitted into the Churchill War Rooms and there are no on-site luggage storage facilities available. On our recent visit, we saw visitors with a suitcase being turned away so worth making alternative arrangements prior to your visit. There are left luggage facilities at Victoria Station 1.5 miles away.
