IWM North, part of the Imperial War Museums

Located in Media City, Manchester, the IWM North, part of the Imperial War Museums, offers a powerful look at conflict in Britain from World War 1 onwards.

The building itself is awe inspiring & offers a visionary symbol of the effects of war; 3 interlocking shards, (representing land, water & air), based around the concept of a world shattered by conflict.

This FREE visitor attraction offers something for everyone & is well worth a visit PLUS fantastic views of Media City & Manchester from the viewing platform.

IWM North; The Big Picture Show

Powerful sounds & images of war that are conveyed in large format around the main exhibition space at regular intervals.  Check out the programme on the day of your visit, take a seat in the main exhibition area & and immerse yourself in a series of concepts surrounding war & conflict.  Works well for visitors of all ages.

IWM North; Viewing Platform

For a nominal fee,  you can access the Air Shard viewing platform that provides fantastic views of Media City, the Manchester United Stadium, Manchester Ship Canal & city centre skyline.  Whilst the IWM North is located next to the new Coronation Street set, I suspect your view of proceedings will be restricted as filming begins on site.

Take the lift or climb the 180 stairs; the choice is yours but remember warm clothes in the colder seasons as you are exposed to the elements from the top of the viewing platform.

IWM North; Action Stations

Great for younger visitors, these action stations are dotted around the main exhibition space and provide interactive opportunities bringing concepts of war & conflict alive for children.  Explore the terrible stenches from the First World War trenches, (smelly feet, mustard gas) or check out the changing programme of events that are aimed specifically at engaging younger visitors.
