Famous New York

November 1st, 2015 / / No Comments »

There are plenty of ways to enjoy New York on a budget from picking up a Sightseeing Pass to taking advantage of free entry at The Met Art Gallery.  Another easy way to enjoy New York without spending a fortune is to explore buildings & venues used in films & TV programmes through the years.

Friends Apartment Building

If you are an avid fan of the TV show Friends, you are bound to recognise this New York building, (see below).  Whilst all the inside shots for the Friends series were undertaken in California, this is the outside shot of the apartment building that was shown throughout the years.

The building is located on the corner of Bedford St & Grove St in Greenwich Village. Whilst there is actually a coffee shop on the corner, I was disappointed to see it wasn’t named Central Perk!

Walk further up Grove St, (12-21 Grove St), to see the exterior shots of where Ross/Ugly Naked Guy lived.

Where Harry Met Sally

Remember back to THAT famous scene in a New York deli…well you too can sit where Sally sat!

Katz Deli was famous long before Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal took the screens with the movie blockbuster When Harry Met Sally.  In fact, although it was packed on the day we visited, we seemed to be the only ones interested in the Harry Met Sally connection.  Look out the large sign hanging from the ceiling that pinpoints exactly where Sally sat.

Katz Deli can be found at 205 East Houston Street, (corner of Ludlow St), and do try out what she’s having as the food is pretty spectacular.

Just be aware that it remains a working fire station!

The Empire State Building

Who can forget Sleepless in Seattle or the Cary Grant classic An Affair to Remember whilst not forgetting King Kong! The Empire State Building is synonymous with romantic movies in New York City through the years and no trip would be complete without a closer look.

Remember your Sightseeing Pass also includes entry to the Empire State Building.

Stand Under the Clock at Grand Central

Grand Central has been the backdrop to countless movies over the years including North By Northwest, The Cotton Club & The Fisher King. In addition, one of the first flash mobs took place at Grand Central Grand Central & quickly went viral.
