Alton Towers SW8; More Information

Located on the former site of The Flume, we understand this new attraction is now set to open at the beginning of the theme park season 2018. Whilst Alton Towers are keeping tight lipped about the exact nature of this latest attraction to hit the park, we’ve manage to pick up a few details on what to expect.   The new coaster will be located upon the site of the Former Log Flume that was decommissioned at the end of the 2015 theme park season.  Bordering Mutiny Bay & Katanga Cayon, this latest attraction will comprise of a new wooden rollercoaster, a station building & separate shop including a new games unit & food kiosk.

Standing 196 metres high, the coaster will include an entrance area for a 140-second pre-show, (suitable for up to 50 people at a time) plus a number ‘themed sound tunnels’ including one which will cover the entire first drop. We’re also interested to learn there is to be a silent magnetic lift system that some thrill seekers have muted as a possible launch pad, (see below for more details on SW8).

Worth also looking out for the NEW Alton Towers Rollercoaster Restaurant where you can follow our tried & tested review that includes top tips to make the most from your visit.

A NEW Wooden Coaster for Alton Towers

With completion of the project anticipated for the end of 2017, thrill seekers would need to await the 2018 theme park season to experience this new addition to the park. Seemingly 2018 is likely to be a good year for thrill seekers which will also see the opening of a NEW Coaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach currently known as Construction 2018.

Whilst the Log Flume and associated theming will be lost to the new attraction, I have to say I was relieved the hear the footings to the Log Flume will remain in place. Although this plan was suggested so as not to adversely affect the vegetation in the area, I’m hoping Alton Towers was a little sentimental about losing this iconic ride too.  A wooden coaster had previously been muted by Alton Towers but plans were withdrawn after facing fierce opposition.  This time round plans have been given the go ahead subject to a range of conditions relating to noise, lighting & construction factors.

Following convention, the new ride will only be known as Secret Weapon 8/SW8 until a final name is disclosed close to opening.  Watch this space for further details!
